About Our Style
Happó Ryú

To master the way of the sword, we practice a wide variety of Japanese sword disciplines – including Suburi, Iai, Kenjutsu, Tameshigiri, and Gekiken – alongside traditional complementary martial arts that once formed the core skills of the samurai, such as Shurikenjutsu (the art of throwing stars and blades).
Happō-ryū (八方流) serves as an umbrella term for a comprehensive system of distinct martial arts bound by a shared core philosophy, classifying it as Sōgō Bujutsu (総合武術).
The style was founded by Sōke Jakub Zeman – also known as the Czech Samurai – by integrating the Morinaga-ha lineage of Toyama-ryū (戸山流 森永派) with Shōgiri techniques and a strong emphasis on movement in all eight directions. The evolution from Toyama-ryū to Happō-ryū occurred naturally over time. Our system principles apply seamlessly not only to the katana, but to other traditional weapons as well.
Happō-ryū is characterized by powerful, decisive strikes designed to settle a duel in a single blow—a philosophy clearly reflected in our Tameshigiri practice. Furthermore, we actively cultivate free-sparring techniques and sword meditation.
